Not to be confused with Richmond City, the Richmond District developed initially in the late 19th century. It has the Presidio to the its North and the Golden Gate Park to its South.  One of the earliest residents, Australian art dealer George Turner Marsh named the Richmond District after a suburb of Melbourne, Australia.

The Vibe:

The Richmond is home to a vast Chinese population and is often endearingly called “The 2nd Chinatown”. Even with current heavy East Asian influence, the Richmond is home to a diverse mix of cultures. It offers a mix of residential and commercial real estate.  The popular architecture type seems to be what is called “Marina-style” which usually consists of a sunroom that can only be accessed through a bedroom and a split bathroom.  With the Pacific Ocean to the West, expect fog and some chilly wind blowing from the ocean.

Accessibility:

Buses, muni and cabs are easily accessible. Bikes, scooters and car-friendly. Since most architectures were built with a fairly large basement, it is not uncommon to convert those into garages; therefore, making it viable to own a vehicle.

Commercial:

Bordered by parks and the ocean, Richmond can prove to be a great choice for dining and recreation with a scenic landscape. Theatre, authentic restaurants and small business stores thrive in this area.

Our Take:

Richmond has laid back locale and a wide variety of recreation options. Served by the SF Unified School District, this safe neighborhood is extremely family-friendly.

Notables:

Sutro Baths, Legion of Honor, Lincoln Park and Golf Course, Sutro Heights Park, The Cliff House, Aziza, Kabuto
